LEGO MOC: Distribution Pole 01

This model depicts a distribution pole — a common sight along roads, alleys, and rural landscapes. These poles carry the medium-voltage lines that bring electricity from substations into our neighborhoods – the microvasculature of the grid.

With the Padmount TX 01 model, I intentionally chose something with a simple form for the purposes of exploring the medium, the modeling software, and the design process. This Distribution Pole 01 model was chosen for similar purposes.

When designing MOCs that are intended to be representative of real structures, there is this inherent tradeoff in detail and scale. At the upper limits, LEGO is small enough that you will be dealing with something more akin to a sculpture. This is not interesting to me. At the lower limits, the size of the brick palette dictate how small you can model something and it still visually represent the intended object in a stand-alone context. I think this is what has made this fun and challenging.

I do believe there are several ways to shrink something like the Distribution Pole 01 further but I the models I imagine only seem useful in a LEGO cityscape context. For a standalone model (think sitting on your shelf), I think this approaches the smallest representation. I definitely think there are some opportunities to add details by adding some scale and explore variations on this same model including different crossarm structures, multiple phases, and different pole top or pole mounted equipment.
